Gluing Solid & Honeycomb Panels with DP462

Gluing Solid & Honeycomb Panels with DP462

Honeycomb panels are achieving greater widespread use in many areas within the transport, housing and marine sectors. The combination of two thin solid surfaces, laminated to a inner honeycomb material, offers numerous advantages over solid surfaces.

Some of these benefits include:

  • Lightweight & rigid.
  • Very easy to handle.
  • Easy to cut & fix.
  • Resistant to water, heat and light.
  • Ability to isolate from both thermal and acoustic sources.
  • Recyclability.

There are three main classes of honeycomb panel, aluminium, polycarbonate and polypropylene.

Aluminium honeycomb is possibly the most well known type, commonly used where high strength, lightness andIMG_0004 an inert surface is required.

Polycarbonate honeycomb is a thermoplastic material. It is manly used in various commercial refrigeration applications, ventilation systems & clean rooms. Polycarbonate honeycomb with density of over 200kg/m3 is also an excellent crash-absorber.

Polypropylene honeycomb can glued to a number light technical fabrics which make the production of sandwich and lightweight panels much easier. In fact, polypropylene honeycomb bonded to technical fabrics, is mainly used as cores for sandwich panels, as reinforcement, and as flat surface for cutting tools and as means to lighten structures. In addition, polypropylene honeycomb is used as support for filters and it is applied to reduce corrosive gas emissions thanks to the chemical-resistance of this product and it reliability in aggressive environments.

When used as a core in sandwich panels, polypropylene honeycomb is faced with different materials, from aluminium sheets to laminated skins, from marine plywood to fiberglass. For all of these applications our DP462 adhesive has set the mark in terms of quality, adhesion and bond longevity.

IMG_0009DP462 is a solvent free moisture curing polyurethane resin which has been developed primarily for use in the manufacture of both honeycomb and solid construction panels. The product has a defined open time which enables laminates to be positioned accurately while the adhesive is still wet so ensuring full adhesive transfer to the substrate giving a total permanent bond once fully cured. One of the most striking properties of DP462 is its ability to wick vertically within the honeycomb matrix, thus establishing truly excellent adhesion to the honeycomb. Our laboratories have established precise open joint times and press times which allow manufacturers to bond a vast array of construction materials within the optimum processing conditions, making a welcome saving in production costs.

Below are the key benefits of DP462

  • Very easy to apply via roller, brush or bead.
  • Exceptional level of adhesion to a wide variety of substrates.
  • Single coat application
  • Very unique flow which enables the adhesive to wick vertically within honeycomb structures.
  • Excellent temperature operating profile.
  • Odourless

DP462 is a unique alternative to the use of solvented adhesives, often used  within the laminating sector. The product is available in small containers, drums and IBC’s.
