Gluing Plastic With Superglue

Plastic glue Ireland

Your plastic gluing friend!

There are literally dozens of different types of plastic and for each family, there is a range of glue types to select from. For some applications, superglue is the ideal choice. It’s a choice for gluing acrylic, polycarbonate, polystyrene, PVC, polyethylene and polypropylene. I good all-rounder actually!

As the best known supplier of superglue in Ireland, we have a glue to suit almost any plastic gluing job. From water thin superglue to exceptionally thick superglue, supplied in cartridges, we have something to meet any need. Available is a very wide range of sizes from 25 ml right up to 25.00 kgs!! All in stock, when and where you need them.

Anyway, so why is superglue such a good plastic bonder? First of all, superglue’s are generally all colourless. Therefore for gluing clear plastics, where a clear glue line is a requisite, they are perfect. Superglues also come in a range of viscosities, therefore they are ideal where there is a tight fit between the components, or for glue jobs where gap filling properties are required. For hard to glue plastics, such as polypropylene or polyethylene, we suggest one of our primers or activators. Over the years, these systems have proved to be boon with plastic fabricators all over Ireland, and indeed further afield.

And don’t forget, superglue goes a long way too! Just a drop is enough in many applications.

Now to actually using the glue.

  1. The plastics must be clean and dry. We have several cleaners and degreasers, which find extensive use in the sign and display sector. If possible, roughen the surface if smooth. A good tip is to dry-fit the parts, just to be sure the fit is good.
  2. Apply the superglue activator to both surfaces, and allow the solvent contained within it, to evaporate. This normally takes about 10 to 15 seconds.
  3. Apply the superglue to one side only of the materials being glued and immediately press the parts together for about 30 seconds. There should be immediate grab, therefore it will not be possible to reposition misaligned parts.
  4. Ideally, clean the tip of the superglue bottle with a paper towel. Do not use cotton in contact with superglue.
